How to Add Ad Code in WordPress

The following step-by-step tutorials will help you on how to place Google ads on WordPress:

How to add ad code in WordPress Using Theme:
Themes are a good option if you want an easy way to manage the placement of ad units on your site. Select WordPress themes that are ‘optimised’ for AdSense. These themes provide predefined spaces and locations where you can place ad code on pages or post elements of your WordPress site. Bear in mind that using themes with predefined spaces and locations might restrict you from placing your ad units exactly where you want.

Additionally, these themes might not support the layout that best suits your content. Some themes have an ‘ads section” built in, but if your theme doesn’t have one, then the easiest way to add your ad units is to use Text Widgets. You might not be able to implement some ad formats such as Page-level ads or Native ads through themes at this time.

Note: For more information on WordPress themes and how to use them, see the official WordPress.org documentation.

On how to add ad code in WordPress, select an option (Auto ads or Ad units) below and follow the instructions to get and copy your of Google Adsense ad code:

Auto Ads
Auto ads are a family of ad formats that offer a simple and innovative way for you to monetise your content. With Auto ads, you place the same piece of ad code once on each page. After you’ve added the code, Google automatically shows ads at optimal times when they’re likely to perform well for you and provide a good experience for your users.

Auto ads let you focus on creating great content. Auto ads automatically place and optimise your ads for you so you don’t have to spend time doing it yourself. They potentially increase your revenue. Auto ads analyse your pages and find new places to show ads based on your layout, content and existing Google ads. They’re easy to use. You place the same piece of code just once on each page that you want to show Auto ads. Google takes care of the rest.

To set up Auto ads, you first choose which ad formats you’d like to show across your pages. To generate your ad code you first need to set up Auto ads for your entire site. If you’ve already done this, you can get the ad code for Auto ads by following these steps:

  • Sign in to your AdSense account.
  • Click Ads.
  • On the ‘Auto ads’ page, click Set up Auto ads.
  • In the ‘Set up Auto ads on your site’ box, click Copy code.

After you’ve done this, you can choose to show different ad formats on some of your pages by creating a URL group. To create a URL group, follow these steps:

  • Sign in to your AdSense account.
  • Click Ads.
  • On the ‘Auto ads’ page, click New URL group.
  • On the ‘Select URLs’ page, select the URLs that you want to add to your URL group. If you don’t see a specific URL, you can click Add URL and add it to your list.
  • Click Next. If some of your URLs already belong to other URL groups, you’ll be asked if you want to move those URLs into your new URL group.
  • On the ‘Select ads’ page, use the controls to select the ad formats for your URL group. Note that the ad formats that you select will override your global settings. If you don’t want to show any ads on the URLs that you’ve selected for your URL group, leave all of the ad formats unselected. For example, you might want to show no ads on the sports section of your site.
  • Leave Automatically get new formats selected if you want AdSense to add new ad formats to your URL group automatically as they become available.
  • Click Next.
On the ‘Review’ page, give your URL group a name and check the assignment summary.
Click Done. The new settings will be applied to your selected URLs in about 10-20 minutes.

Note: If you no longer need a URL group, you can disable it by deselecting all of URLs in the group.

Ad Units

  • Sign in to your AdSense account.
  • Click Ads.

  • Click Display ads.
  • Give your ad unit a name. Use a unique, descriptive name to help you find your ad unit later.
  • In the “Ad size” section, choose the size of the ads that you’d like to show. Google recommends that you leave Responsive selected. Responsive ads automatically adapt their size to fit your page layout and your users’ devices. If you prefer to specify the size of the ads that appear on your page, select Fixed and enter the required width and height. Note that fixed-sized ad units may have a limited pool of ads available, which might result in lower earnings than using responsive. For more information, see Google guidelines for fixed-sized display ad units.
  • Click Save and get code.
  • Copy and paste the ad unit code in between the tags of your pages where you want ads to appear. If you’re not sure how to do this, you might want to review Google Adsense code implementation guide.
  • Click Done. It usually takes a few minutes for ads to appear on the page, but occasionally it can take up to an hour. If ads still aren’t showing after an hour, check that your site has a status of “ready” on your Sites page.
